True Tumescent Liposuction
The Future of Body Contouring is Gentle AND Beautiful!
If you have considered liposuction but held off because of fear of the pain, long recovery time, or lack of safety, we would love the opportunity to introduce a newer, better and different way to undergo liposuction.
True Tumescent Liposuction by Dr. William Ehrlich, our oculofacial and cosmetic surgeon, is ideal for body shaping as it can target problem areas – you know – those stubborn areas of fat that just won’t go away.
What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a method of contouring and removing fat deposits from areas of the body that don’t change with diet and exercise.
The technique of liposuction has been in existence for decades. However, many patients experienced significant complications from the original liposuction surgery that involved general anesthesia and major incisions.
With the advent of newer, less invasive procedures such as True Tumescent Liposuction, thousands of patients successfully undergo this popular cosmetic surgery every year. There are other liposuction techniques, but Dr. Ehrlich believes that True Tumescent Liposuction is the safest and most comfortable method for patients.
How is True Tumescent Liposuction Different than Traditional Liposuction?
True Tumescent Liposuction is an anesthesia-free and stitch-free procedure! Dr. Ehrlich uses tiny cannulas (suction tubes) that are much smaller than those used in traditional liposuction.
The result is a safer, gentler procedure with a shorter recovery time and excellent results. The complication rate is at least 1,000 times less with True Tumescent Liposuction than it is with traditional methods.
Because traditional liposuction is a more invasive procedure requiring larger cannulas, incisions, and stitches, it is usually done with either general anesthesia or IV sedation. Recovery can take weeks and can be quite painful.
Conversely, True Tumescent Liposuction does not require systemic anesthesia of any kind. Patients are very relaxed and awake during the comfortable and minimally invasive procedure.
Since the cannula used in True Tumescent Liposuction is so small, there is no scarring and sutures are not needed. Patients can return to work and most normal activities in 36-72 hours.
What Areas Can be Treated with True Tumescent Liposuction?
True Tumescent Liposuction works well for many areas of the body, including:
- Inner knees
- Bra bulges
- Love handles
Benefits of True Tumescent Liposuction:
- Anesthesia-free, 1,000 times safer than traditional liposuction
- Stitch-free (no incisions)
- Gentle, virtually pain-free
- Short recovery time
- Great, long-lasting results with one procedure
Is True Tumescent Liposuction Used for Anything Else?
Yes, it is beneficial for several other conditions, including:
- Removal of lipomas and “dowager humps”
- Removal of benign fatty tumors
- Reduction of female breast size (breast reduction)
- Reduction of some types of male breast enlargement
Will It Help Me Lose Weight?
There may be a small weight loss after the procedure, but True Tumescent Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery. It is not a substitute for losing weight by reducing calories, eating healthy foods, and exercising.
How Will I Know If True Tumescent Liposuction Is Right for Me?
The first step is a consultation with Dr. Ehrlich at Frantz Cosmetic Center. He will do a physical examination and take your medical history.
Then he will examine your skin and the areas you would like contoured. During this time, you can discuss your cosmetic goals and what’s achievable with True Tumescent Liposuction.
Who is a Good Candidate for True Tumescent Liposuction?
An ideal candidate is a healthy person with localized deposits of fat that are out of proportion with the rest of their body. The procedure is most successful for patients with good muscle tone and skin elasticity.
True Tumescent Liposuction is not usually recommended for people with circulation or blood flow problems. This includes coronary artery disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.
How Will I Prepare for the Procedure?
Once you decide to have True Tumescent Liposuction, Dr. Ehrlich will give you specific instructions. It is important to tell him about all the medications that you take.
This should include nutritional and herbal supplements. Dr. Ehrlich will let you know if you need to stop taking any medications before True Tumescent Liposuction.
He may also recommend that you stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery, as smoking can interfere with healing.
On the day of surgery, wear loose-fitting clothing that opens in the front, or can be easily removed over the head.
What Happens During the Procedure?
True Tumescent Liposuction is performed using local anesthesia. The surgeon injects the area with the local anesthetic (diluted lidocaine) and a blood vessel constrictor (epinephrine).
This “tumescent fluid” protects structures deeper than the fat layer. It also provides excellent local anesthesia and minimizes bleeding. It is the safest method for fat removal.
The fat deposits are then suctioned out through small suction tubes called cannulas. The tube is connected to a small vacuum-like machine.
The surgeon uses back and forth movements to suck the fat through the cannula into a sterile collection system.
What Can I Expect During Recovery?
During recovery from True Tumescent Liposuction, expect some drainage. This will come from the injection sites.
The local anesthetic injected into the fatty tissue lasts for about 24 hours following surgery. This usually controls initial post-operative pain.
Once the anesthetic wears off, patients may experience some soreness and discomfort for a few days. This is usually managed with an over the counter medication like Tylenol.
Most patients are alert and able to function without nausea or grogginess after the procedure. Light activity such as walking is encouraged to enhance healing. Garments are supplied, and you are urged to wear them for at least 14 days after the procedure.
Exercise can be resumed three to seven days after the procedure. If your job does not involve heavy physical labor, you can usually return to work within a few days.
Bruising will disappear and most of the swelling will go down in a few days. Although you will see improvement within one to two weeks, the full recovery takes longer.
It takes at least three to four months, and in some cases, it could take as long as six months, to see the treatment’s full benefit.
Are the Results Permanent?
Liposuction procedures work best if you do not gain weight afterwards. Those who gain weight may find that the fat is simply redistributed to a different part of the body. The fat does not “go to other areas of the body,” as is sometimes presented in the media. Dr. Ehrlich has multiple patients who have not gained significant weight and have retained the positive changes of true tumescent liposuction for over 15 years.
What Are the Risks of True Tumescent Liposuction?
Like all surgical procedures, True Tumescent Liposuction carries both benefits and risks. It is considered a safe surgery by most doctors.
Risk is greatly reduced because it does not use general anesthesia. There are some rare complications, which are usually minor. The most common include:
- Skin irregularity
- Lumpiness and dimpling
- Loose skin
- Scarring (usually a 1-2-millimeter spot)
Every patient is unique. Dr. Ehrlich can explain the risks and benefits of the procedure, and help you decide what is best for you.
